Lama Lodu Rinpoche is the resident lama of Kagyu Droden Kunchab in San Francisco, appointed in 1976 by His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa and His Eminence Kalu Rinpoche.

ABOUT THE TEACHING

Calm Abiding and Insight are two meditation practices that are developed together on the path of Buddha Dharma. Calm abiding meditation, also known as Shamatha or Shinay, is the foundational phase that stabilizes the mind by cultivating a steady awareness of the object of meditation. Insight Meditation, also known as Vipassana or Lhatong, is the subsequent deeper phase that develops an understanding of the nature of thoughts. Training in these practices leads the meditator toward the goal of realization of the True Nature of Mind, the enlightened state. ,

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Lama Lodu was born in Sikkim in 1942 into a Tibetan family. His grandfather, Lama Wongten, was held in very high esteem throughout the region as a yogi and general practitioner of the Dharma. Lama Lodru completed his preliminary training and education at the monasteries of His Holiness the Karmapa and His Eminence Kalu Rinpoche. He also studied and trained under the great yogi Drupon Tenzin Rinpoche and His Eminence Thrangu Rinpoche. Lama completed the traditional three-year retreat under H.E. Kalu Rinpoche, and then spent a period of time leading isolated retreats. He then went to Kalu Rinpoches monastery in Sonada and served for seven years as puja master. Lama taught for two years at various European centers before coming to KDK.

The Karmapa described Lama as, “a Lama who has highly developed his inner practice.”

Lama Lodru’s teachings are very clear, unique, and profound. They touch the heart of everyone who listens.

Monlam means the path of aspiration and is a form of prayer. Here, it refers to the tradition of Monlam Chenmo, the great prayer gathering that has historically been part of Tibetan New Year celebrations for more than 600 years. During a Monlam, the participants recite prayers with the aspiration to liberate all sentient beings from suffering and for all to achieve enlightenment.

Over the last few decades, the Monlam tradition has been revived and greatly enriched. Multiple Monlams are now held at different times during the year in Tibet, India, Nepal, and Bhutan—each organized by one of the various Buddhist lineages or one of the large monasteries in those countries. Nowadays, Monlams are also held all over the world. In this way, the Monlam tradition is flourishing in a truly limitless and non-sectarian way.
-North American Sakya Monlam for World Peace

May all beings have happiness and the cause of happiness.
May they be free from suffering and the cause of suffering.
May they never part from the happiness that knows no suffering.
May they dwell in equanimity, free from attachment and aversion to things near and far.
~ Four Immeasurables

THE 4 DEITIES PRACTICE:

“The contemplative practice of the Lama Vajradhara grants the highest accomplishments in this very life. Speedy attainment of the stages of the path depends upon two factors. Dispelling of
hindrances and enhancement of contemplative experience. The ultimate method for dispelling outer hindrances is that of the Protector; for inner ones that of Tara. The very best method for the outer enhancement of loving kindness and compassion is the practice of Avalokiteshvara; for the inner enhancement of bliss and heat we practice Vajrayogini. Thus a single session of this practice covers every stage of the path. You can accomplish this in three months of undistracted practice. Meditation upon this without fail at each dawn session, brings about
ordinary and extra-ordinary accomplishments!”
